Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s Poem: BOL (Speak)

Translated from Urdu by Harsh Bhasin

for your lips are still free…

for the tongue is still yours.

That virile body that is yours–

For life is still yours.

in the blacksmith’s shop,

fierce the flames, red the anvil,

the forge: its hungry jaws widening,

the chains: its lap, inviting–

for this short time is enough

before body & tongue’s demise.

for truth is still alive.

whatever you want to say… speak it!

Bol By Faiz  in Urdu)

Bol, ke lab azaad hain tere:

Bol, zubaan ab tak teri hai,

Tera sutwaan jism hai tera –

Bol, ke jaan ab tak teri hai.

Dekh, ke aahangar ki dukaan mein

Tund hain sholey, surkh hai aahan,

Khulne lage quflon ke dahaane,

Phaila har ik zanjeer ka daaman.

Bol, ye thoda waqt bahut hai,

Jism-o-zubaan ki maut se paihle;

Bol, ke sach zinda hai ab tak

Bol, kuchh kaihna hai, kaih-le.
